From beach friendships in the 1950s to national titles. The story of a San Diego rugby institution.

Our history
Our History

A legacy of grit, sand, and success

OMBAC Rugby's story isn't just about tackles, tries, and trophies. It's a tale of community and the unwavering spirit of Old Mission Beach woven into the fabric of American rugby.

1930s–50s

Friendships on the boardwalk

The seeds were sown on the beaches of Old Mission Beach, where friendships laid the foundation for a future athletic club. In 1954, the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club was born, spanning volleyball, surfing, and eventually rugby.

1960s

Birth of a rugby powerhouse

In 1966, fueled by San Diego State rugby alumni, OMBAC Rugby emerged as a distinct side within the club. Two years later, in 1968, they charged into first-division competition and showed their tenacity.

1980s–90s

A national powerhouse

OMBAC became one of the most feared sides in American rugby, stacking up National Division I Fifteens titles through two decades and taking national Sevens crowns along the way.
